Harkany bath

The Harkány Bath is considered one of the best-known spas in Hungary. Its particularly sunny, southern microclimate complements the beneficial effect of the sulfur medicinal water that springs up here, which primarily provides tangible results in the prevention and treatment of musculoskeletal and joint diseases.

The prominent tourist destination of Baranya County lies at the foot of the Villányi Mountains, its history goes back to the beginning of the 19th century. At that time, Count Antal Batthyány drained the swamp in the area of the spa. According to the legend, the people of the area began to rest their rheumatic limbs in the swamp and found that the pain disappeared. Word of the miracle spread quickly. Recognizing the potential inherent in medicinal water, the Batthyány family built the spa.

The healing water of Harkány rarely rises to the surface from a depth of only 50-70 meters, with an average temperature of 62 °C. The mineral content is more than 1000 mg per liter. From a medicinal point of view, its most significant mineral is carbonyl sulphide, which was discovered by chemists when analyzing this medicinal water. The compound in the water of the pools - released from pressure - immediately begins to decompose, transforming into hydrogen sulphide gas, which gives off its characteristic smell. It is very actively absorbed into the body both through the skin and when inhaled.
